Furnace Farm

Another enjoyable stay at Furnace Farm. Due to restrictions on travel, etc., we weren't able to take our normal break in June as so made a short break in August. The views are stunning as always, especially when camped at the top of higher ground. Some lovely walks along the Welsh Coast Path through woodland and open heath in the hills at the back of Furnace village. Understandably Mrs Griffiths had closed the facilities block due to Covid as it meant constant cleaning for her. She is also trying to encourage more recycling as general waste is only collected every three week. The ground is slightly undulating so you may need to level motorhomes or caravans with chocks or jacks but we usually find a good balance without too much effort. Despite heavy rain at times the field is well drained and didn't become water logged. Motorhomers will need a portable grey water tank to dispose of waste. Looking forward to returning next year.

A little gem

We arrived at furnace farm in our motorhome after a week of near continuous rain. There were no hardstandings and we were apprehensive of driving onto the site. These worries were unfounded, the field has undergone exrensive draining and was rock solid. We had a lovely welcome from mr. and mrs griffiths and they were really lovely site owners. The views are brilliant. There is a ladies and gents toilet which are spotlessly clean. There is also a shower. The bus stops for machynlleth and dolgellau also aberystwyth are about 200 mtrs from the site. We shall definately return. Diolch yn fawr, thank you both for a lovely few days. Bryan norma

A Most Enjoyable Short Stay

We were only able to spend 2 nights at this perfectly placed CL but it was enough to make sure that it would go on the return list. Mrs.Griffiths handled the booking and I met both her and her husband, both of whom were able and friendly hosts. The CL is set behind their house which is on the main road running through the small village of Furnace, about 8 miles south of Machynlleth. The field is quite large and there are 3x2 Electric points at well spaced intervals for you to choose wherever you wish. It is an enclosed field as there are livestock in the other fields. It can best be described as an undulating meadow and as there as mounds and dips you may find you need levellers but as it is so large you could quite easily find a flat piece, side-to-side, as we did. The owners provide 2 toilets, one for Men and one for Women. There is also a shower, which we didn't use as we showered in the van. However it looked clean and well cared for. The owners ask that you recycle properly as the local council are very strict about such matters and they provide bins for that purpose. One strange thing was that they didn't have a bin for general waste and Mrs.Griffiths asked that we leave it near the other bins and they would take care of it. The Elsan point is accessed direct from lifting the grid, handles attached, and this is where the grey waste should go. The road does see a steady stream of traffic but it dies down at night and didn't stop us from enjoying a good sleep. When approaching Furnace from Machynlleth be ready to turn right almost immediately after the bridge. There is a small CL sign there, below a sign that advertises a "To Let" cottage, which belongs to the CL owners. Obviously look out for the sign and bridge if approaching from Borth. We stayed here so that we could get close access to Ynys Hir RSPB nature reserve, less than 1 mile away, but we also found that we could walk direct from the site which was excellent with the Welsh Coast Path running nearby. The Dyfi Osprey Project is also nearby and Springtime is the perfect time for a visit if that is your thing. Bus stops on the main road for those that need it. The local scenery is wonderful and there is a small waterfall opposite the CL where an old Iron Works used to be and some of it, including the Waterwheel still stand. We paid £12 per night. There is a small charge of £0.50 per dog and £2.00 for an awning. Can't remember charges for Children (sorry). Excellent value for money. As said at the top, one CL that we will return to.

Lovely site in good location

Lovely site as stated by others. Well kept short grass. Sloping for parts but a large area and well drained by field drains. Well frequented by motorhomes whilst we were there. Owners couldn’t be more helpful and they are very interesting to talk to about the history of the local area, Mr Griffiths especially as he's been living there all his life. Note that dogs must be kept on leads on site. We stayed for 5 days in mid July – it was hot - but cooler than at home.. Borth beach is lovely but NO DOGS (well enforced) except at the northern end – Dog friendly area starting opposite Youth Hostel. Good Sunday Market and Car Boot at Clarach - signposted from Bow Street. Good views form top pitches. - downside is that water and disposal is at bottom next to entrance. There is a super cafe and community shop 4km south at Tre’r Ddol (opposite turn to Borth) and the pub next door to it, The Wildfowler, does very good food at treasonable prices. A very enjoyable visit and we hope to be back.

Nice site

Lovely site, grass short, toilets clean. Big field with views of the mountains. The furnace was very interesting. We were coming from the north, negotiated the narrow bridge saw a CMC sign but no name saying Furnace farm so went on by, so phoned and we were at the right place so then had to turn around not easy when there are 2 caravans together. If the name had been visible it would of been easy just off the main road.

A lovely CL

A lovely open field, so plenty of space, although this could be a problem if very wet. Added bonus of shower and WC which was clean and tidy. We were touring and only stayed a couple of nights, but would recommend this site for location and ease of access. We found no reception for our TV and phones.

GREAT C.L.

What a lovely site. Access is very easy, straight off the A487 just make sure you don't miss the sign, if travelling towards Aberystwyth- as you come in to Furnace there is a right hand bend and then the site is on your right. 2 acres of field to choose from, Fabulous. Mrs Griffiths is such a lovely lady and so helpful. Will definitely stay if in the area again. Thanks from the Nixons

Lovely site and area

The site is well worth visiting and the owners very nice. Can be a little wet in areas after heavy rain but this should not dampen your spirits. If using an awning add £2 per night. Still great value. The area is wonderful with an RSPB reserve within easy walking distance. Great views from the site . This site was a definite hit with my family .

Welcoming

Fabulous site with, for C/Ls, great facilities. Non and John are the stars of the show, very warm people. Good size field so never too close to your neighbours yet still neighbourly. We were on site for two weeks of which only one day blessed us with good weather. It didn't matter though, the area is so beautiful things to do can always be found. The only downside to the site is the road noise which is quite acceptable at the extreme high ground, but a bit intrusive near to the farm house. Loved our stay though.
