Groundsheets in Awnings

Why do so many people put down a groundsheet in their awnings? I could understand it if the awning was used for sleeping in but I think that's fairly unusual. On a hardstanding the use of a groundsheet seems completely unnecessary and on a grass pitch it has to be lifted every day to avoid damaging the grass. So what is the point of a groundsheet?
