Flapping & Flashing

On a recent outing we found ourselves pitched near others with large flags on tall flexible poles planted in the ground. Although the flapping was not particularly loud the movement was constantly in our vision and when sitting out the flag's shadow from the van next to us constantly waved across our hardstanding. To cap it all at night we were treated to a light show with flashes and colour changes up and down these poles. Now I don't mind such things at rallies or shows but on sites where we go to enjoy the peace and quiet and escape the hassles of modern living I feel these are intrusive and dominate the skyline of the entire site. Do others feel the same?

Anyone is welcome to challenge me if I decide to put my flagpole up on a club site but it wouldn't stop me.

I'd enjoy the laugh

You rebel Jayess! 😂 😂

I used to like the idea of a flag pole, but my wife wouldn't allow it.  She said I could have a Cadac instead - I've not looked back since.

I don't mind other people putting them up providing they are very secure and there is no danger of my 'van coming to any harm.  These days, though, I couldn't really be bothered putting one up.  Extra work and extra carriage.

..........I'll stick with my Cadac and a pint of beer!!

Once a rebel...

but seriously if anyone 'challenged' me over something that wasn't breaking a site rule then they could challenge away. What are they going to do? Run to the warden like a primary school kid? surprised

I wouldn't be hiding in my van till the cross man had gone either. I might not be out but it would be because I don't get up early when I'm on holiday. If I was up I'd be more than happy to continue the discussion until they jogged on

Our next door neighbour had one up on his pitch in Spain. The pole was on his pitch, but the flag was over our caravan. Initially he took it down a couple of times because of the high wind at night, but after a few days he seemed to just forget about it. The constant flapping noise was irritating me and I asked him to move it to the other side of his pitch so that the flapping was over his own motor caravan, but he ignored this request too. When the flapping noise woke me at about 3 am one morning I'd had enough. I went round and took his flag down and chucked it on the ground. He put it straight back up the following day. I told the site manager about it and the flag was taken down and stayed down. These things are a selfish and in my view silly form of entertainment similar in their level of annoyance to radio and tv noise.

Ah ha!  My question is answered. They do run to the warden like a primary school kid.

Ah ha! I see the juxtaposition here. They stick 'em up like primary school kids out to tittleate themselves.wink Well some of them that is!undecided

That seems a good idea in this circumstance and is underpinned by a very real need. I guess many used at festivals & shows are deployed for much the same reason but I would think there is a very much reduced need for such on the 'run of the mill' ordinary site.

For me there are lots of individual behaviours which have a very low if any impact on the rest but a few which do. Often these flags and alike do dominate pitches and often sites and are clearly visible and audible when breezy to the many.

I tend to make decisions about my behaviours based on the impact on others, not my self, but I am willing to accept without question that for some this means of identification and positioning of pitch is a requirement.

Rather rich that final paragraph, Micky......given your wholehearted support for people who leave site late without paying, which impacts greatly on new arrivals who have paid.

Anyway, surely if these flags are allowed (with warden's discretion) then you have no right to complain about them? wink

It takes more than a flag on a pole to titillate I'm afraid. wink

I haven't bothered with mine on site so far. I've been parked next to folk with them and it's been less disturbing than other things that other site users do. However I do think that some of the posters on your thread have brought out the naughty side of me.

I've read some of the replies to friends who have laughed heartily and asked if they are typical club members.

Good for you Jayess, at least you can see there are two sides to the discussion. From dogs barking, to BBQ smoke across adjacent pitch, to TV too loud, to walking across another's pitch we are all different as  far as to our 'standards' of behaviour are concerned. It's about time we all considered those around us before we make our own judgements about what we do. For me I ask myself if my behaviour is likely to cause concern to others! If yes, there will be a distinct possibility I will choose not to do so and upset others. These flags and light do cause some concerns for some folk, at least you accept that and have had a hearty laugh about it!
