What is the point of them?

Talking about cars in general last night with friends and whether a tow vehicle or not, I was asked "What is the point of an SUV? They seem to be neither one thing nor the other with no apparent benefit".

In truth, I couldn't answer the question. Anyone got an answer?

When I buy a car, apart from the inevitable towing capacity, the next thing I look for is plenty of headroom (I think I must be larger from my 'rear end' to the top of my head).  Not only do I hate bumping my head on the roof, but I find many cars claustrophobic!. I like to sit up high and not on the floor of the car, and, of course, the car needs to be long enough to accommodate piano keyboards, speakers and all the other paraphernalia I take to concerts.  Then there's accommodating the grandchildren and the dog.

All in all, I'm happy with the Discovery.  I just wish it wouldn't drink diesel quite as quickly!

We currently go from one extreme to the other. We have an MGB, known lovingly as “the skateboard”  Getting in is easy, driving with nearly straight legs is so comfortable, getting out requires a degree of flexibility and muscle usage that seems to be getting a tad harder each year!wink

Then we have two Jeeps. One with quite large wheels and lifted suspension. Getting in requires a bit of hopping, but you just pour yourself out. Mum, who is almost 90 has to use a little step to get in, but likes the hop out! She also enjoys going off road!

It seems that the majority consider the main advantage is being higher off the road making entry / exit from the vehicle easier

Many dsiabled drivers and passengers would disagree with that statement. I have always thought SUVs to be over engineered and oversized for everyday use. Why not have a large estate car for load carrying capacity? Myself, I prefer a small nippy car, preferrably an automatic, much easier to use as an everyday run around.

My friend with Parkinsons prefers the higher seating. He does not move well and a 15 feet trip to the toilet cab take between 5 and 10 minutes and his electric powered chair lifts him out of his seat or he would be trapped.

Whikst he finds our X-Trail a little easier to get into he finds it a lot easier to get out of.

I have recently changed to a VW Caravelle, after VW Touran MPVs for 14 years.  We did go over to Motorcaravans for eight years, and a return to the improved visibility, spaciousness and ergonomically comfortable seating, similar to that in motorhomes, is very pleasurable.
