Why not? 

Just thinking of changing my towcar, seem on the surface quite cheap to run. 

You don’t need to explain, TC, as it's pretty obvious you’re considering one as a tow car and I’d help if I could.

My last experience of a Jag was an XJ6 4.2 but hopefully somebody else will know all about the XF.

I towed with a XF 3L back in  2012 . Towed a Sprite about 1420kg if I remember rightly. Towed great, only minus was that caravan nose was very low so occasionally had issues when going over speed bumps, on some sites. MPG about 26 when towing. As a solo it was superb and I loved it, but not cheap to run and a big deprecation hit.
