I now have a Tiguan DSG previously a TC CX-5.

The one and only negative I've found is a DSG won't hold on a slope with no brakes unlike the TC box, so I have started to use auto hold.

Low speed smoothness  seems no different to the TC to me.

What I really like about the DSG is the ease that I can use sport or the paddle change.

Long term negative would be service costs at 40K miles I believe, but I don't keep cars that long so not an issue.

Obviously it depends on how steep the hill is as to whether a TC auto will hold on a hill but that's what your other foot is for. 😊

TC auto's can have 'sport' & flappy paddles too 😉

Yep, my Jeep GC has sport and flappy paddles and works a treat when the teenage Corsa boys think they can rip you off. I sometimes give them a wave through my rear view mirrors. wink

My cx-5 TC didn't have sport or paddles. frown

My automatic Vauxhalls (Senators, Omega & Astra) didn't have flappy paddles either, but had 'sport' mode, like wise SWMBO's Citroen but it does have a manual +/- option .... but both are frequently fitted these days 😉

My Merc doesn't have a winter/snow mode but all other recent autos have had

I believe the 150bhp manual 4wd with 7 seats is not type type approved for a towbar and one of the other variants needs cooling system upgrades which are undertaken if you specify "Tow Bar Preparation". Retrospectively fitting a towbar with cooling system upgrades can cost upto £4000.00.

Be warned - I have been in the automotive industry for 44 years and any form of towing is abusive to any gearbox in any car.

The automatics are deemed as weaker and more expensive to repair / replace.Whilst the manuals are stronger and less costly to repair.

Of course this is also dependent upon the weight you are towing and the driver (especially the driver) !

Now - has that put the cat amongst the pigeons or what !!!!!!!!

Yes i do tow a caravan and have done for 35 years

'Automatics' is a big topic. Are we talking about torque converter, DSG type dual clutch or DAF Variomatic rubber band dual cone rubber band type (I know they've moved on from rubber bands). Or does a Lanchester pre-selector type fall within the last 44 yrs? wink
