Freelander & horsebox

What's a Freelander capable of towing?

I was overtaken on the motorway today (on my way back from my so called imaginary CC site) by a Freelander that had 5 people in it & towing a horse box with 2 horses in it. No idea of the weights a Freelander is capable of towing, but I'd imagine a horse box & 2 horses would be heavy! It was pretty down on its rear suspension too & didn't look particularly stable.

To many variables to say really. Could have been lightweight but tall horses, trailer might have been lightweight, there are some very dodgy tow vehicles in the horse world, although probably not as many as you see hauling caravans! We towed our horse box for a short while with a 3.5 litre SD1, but only with one horse in, and up the hills round here it wasn’t really up to the job. We soon got another Land Rover.

We’re in the process of changing our car - from a Discovery 4 to the newer version. I fancied a Discovery Sport (cheaper!),  - similar to a Freelander- but though it would tow our large caravan, it wouldn’t cope with the cattle trailer and cows. So the full fat Discovery it is.

There’s different versions of these cars, different engine sizes etc, and we can only speculate. But it was probably “on the edge”.

Always safer to go with a proper tow car where animals are concerned👍

Which is why a lad at work bought a 5.0 V10 VW Touareg to tow his daughter's horse box cool
