Problem with porch awning

Hi there, looking for some help with setting up a porch awning.  We are new to caravanning, we have a small 2-berth Adria Altea and I have recently bought a used Bradcot Portico Porch Awning.  Tried setting awning it up on our van and we cannot fit the roof pole hooks to the brackets.  I have downloaded 3 photos to help show the problem.

Photo 1 shows the short piece of piping that the brackets fit on.  Can anyone confirm that this is ok, it is at a right angle to the main piping, I thought it would be underneath and parallel to the main piping.

Photo 2 shows the bracket fitted onto the short bit of piping.  Does this look like the correct bracket.

Photo 3 shows how I have fitted the back upright pole eye to the roof pole hook but there is no way the hook will fit into the bracket slotted hole.  Does this setup look ok or am I doing something wrong.

Lastly could anyone tell me what the brass eyelet is for on each end of the main piping, it can be seen on phot 3.  Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated, thank you, Alan Sherwood

Hi,

We have a similar awning also acquired "used" from ebay. I think yours has been altered to add the short pieces at right angles to the main roof beading. We also added some short lengths to ours but attached them parallel to the main bead but "upside down" so that the bracket could clip on as you have done. I suspect the awning was originally designed so that the roof poles hooked into little plastic receivers screwed to the side of the caravan. Most modern awnings have a double edged beading and the screwless brackets just clip onto the lower edge. I suggest that you reposition the short pieces on yours.

Regarding fitting the rear poles, it is a pain even with the brackets fitted in a conventional "vertical" position. I usually put the roof pole hook through the eye of the rear leg and just let the top half of the leg dangle while fitting the hook into the bracket (it will go if you line it up with the hole). Then assemble the rest of the poles before finally adding the lower half of the rear legs.

I think the eyelets in the ends can be used to pull the awning through the channel with a big hook or to attach guys to stretch out the roof.

It's great when it's erected though!

Thank you PeteCl for your reply.  I will take your advice and alter the bracket piping and follow your advice re coupling up.  Thank you for taking the time to get back.  I am still trying to set up my profile properly with a photo and user name.  The awning looks good on your van!

There should be a smaller diameter piece of piping sewn onto the other side of the piping that your pics show.  That is what the awning rail brackets fit brackets to and puts them the correct way up for your pole end.  We used to have a Portico and now have a Isabella Minor but they both work on a similar system.

Why don't manufacturers make their porch awnings slide into the awning rail and then peg down as appropriate?

Is that too simple for them?

Hi there,  thank you for everyone that has contributed to the discussion.  I have ordered some 5mm diameter piping online for the roof pole brackets to fit onto and I am going to sew two short pieces on in the appropriate positions but parallel to the main piping as advised and see if that makes it better, thank you, regards, shertie
