Mistake - forgot to disconnect electrics from car

Hi everyone,

ive gone and done something a little bit stupid. I was unhitching my caravan at the storage site and I drove forward, forgetting to disconnect the electric socket from the car. Didn’t look like there was any damage, however when I plugged it back in to test the lights etc, it now doesn’t work.

Has anyone done this before? Any tips on how I can check what has happened?

Many Thanks

15 days for a first post to appear must be a record time for vetting a non-member.

You’ve probably sorted the problem by now, DCH. If not, you need to check the wiring though as clearly something has broken or become disconnected. Perhaps an auto electrician or towbar fitter will be able to help if you're not kitted up with a test meter.

I hooked my plug round the tow hitch by accident and as I drove off most of the pins were yanked through the body of the plug. I bought a new plug from my dealer and fitted it myself. It was quite straight forward but it does need a fair amount of skill and the right tool to strip back the insulation. Back in 1964 when I joined the GPO as a youth in training they issued me with a wire stripper. It finally came in handy!

A wire stripper is a great little tool, one of those things I’m always delighted  to find in the bottom of the tool box on the occasional times I need one. Saves a visit to A&E when you slip with the stanley knife or to the dentist when you resort to using your teeth (don’t ask 😩)!
