Hot or cold

Is it better to heat your unit over winter or leave it cold . It seems black mould is killed by freezing temperatures but the unit may become damp or heat it (if so to what temperature) and stand the cost .

Any thoughts please

Our van is stored on the drive the heating is only turned on during the service and if we test it prior to going away, as normal its been  drained down for the winter come the spring on the fine days the sky lights and windows will be opened to give it a good airing, so good to go just hope the new booking system is up to the job

Having read the tips on  here especially about leaving  cupboards open I went out to  the van and found the heating on  at 21 degrees.  Dont know who turned it on, possibly the engineers  who dealt with the fridge last week. fortunately but the power is only on periodically.

We had 4 caravans in total; two had severe damp and one other a small damp repair so we bought a motorhome and that had bad damp after 5 years. Only used our vans occasionally and never heated them when stored. So, maybe we should have kept the heat on?

We heat the van on a frost stat control when it gets very cold. We open up everything and prop the washroom door open. That's because we have access to electricity.  As we've always done it with all of our vans we don't know if it helps or not and we've still occasionally found condensation in the coldest cupboard (which is under the sink in our van.) Ventilation is key to prevent condensation forming and getting onto surfaces etc.

Thanks for posting this question - I posted a similar question a week or two ago but the thread suddenly vanished.

I leave ours permanently on EHU with the heating on but set to a very low temperature. It has an Alde system that provides underfloor heating as well as heat the radiators. Equally the heating system warms the water tanks and system to prevent freezing. With the system temperature set at 5°C I can rest assured that the system won't freeze should it get really cold. Equally the cost will be minimal as it will rarely activate here down south. As a bonus the smart charger will keep the leisure batteries and engine battery up to scratch.

Incidentally warm air is not really a concern.  It has no special property that lets it soak up more water vapor.  It’s just that, at higher temperatures, water molecules are more likely to go into the vapor phase, so there will be more water vapor in the air.  The problem of mold can occur when that warmer air containing water vapor comes into contact with a colder surface and the vapor condenses and dampens the surface encouraging mold growth.  Good ventilation is a very good strategy but if the interior of the van is dry(ish) and it is ventilated on a misty day then logically the humidity in the van will rise no matter what you do.

I will stick with my strategy as it has kept our current van dry for the last six years and it is always ready to go; even the bed remains made up wink.
