Posted on 11/01/2021 09:21 by SteveLFor unknown sites I always program the sat nav by use of waypoints, using the CAMC final directions obtained from the web. Just occasionally there is an additional note about a road closure or event that the handbook would not give you.

Posted on 11/01/2021 09:26 by SteveLIt does depend on what purpose one puts it to. ๐
I used to think I wouldnโt utilise one.

Well, for me, I have a more useful size screen on my 10'' tablet which travels in the car on holiday when we are out and many a time I would not wish to carry a bulky smart phone. A bit like my eldest who uses a smart phone but doesn't want to carry it whilst walking the dog down to the beach etc.
OH has a £500 smart phone which is mainly for use as a camera and rides in her handbag when she does not want to carry a camera, particularly in towns or cities. I usually slip the mobile router in my pocket when in such areas in case we want directions. She also has a small mobile like mine that is her 'daily carry'.

Posted on 10/01/2021 22:15 by PhishingWell done Tommo, you were the first to offer a veiled questioning of my membership. I joined to benefit from some of the very good products and services offered by the club.
I have never said that, I do question the fact that the club is stuck in the 1960s with respect to understanding the requirements of their customers for certain parts of their service.
The assume that everyone will turn up and pay their fees as they have done for ever. The next generation will not do this and without understanding how the next generation operate they will struggle to compete with the current best in class options that are available to those in the hobby.

How far in advance generation are you refering to, as with the increasing membership and the amount of those who it seems "lurk" on the forum ,,it does not seem to compute with your synopsis of the current or future methods of not needing the Sites directory
The NT and EH seem to also acknowledge the need of a hard copy of their information ,
As i was advised by a couple of Kelly communications engineers ,"all technology has a max capacity ",when they were yet again adding to the Virgin fibre optic cables to try to get their advertised speeds

Posted on 11/01/2021 09:46 by EmilysDadIf you've never had a smart phone how do you know they wouldn't be fit for your purpose? ๐
Posted on 11/01/2021 10:00
A slight Misquote ED. I said that they would not be fit for my purpose. My purpose is to make or receive a call
What I want from a phone is that it is always with me. If I am under a bush at the bottom of the garden on a sunny day and you ring my phone it will be in my rhs front trouser pocket in reach. A smart phone with reasonable screen size would not be. If I need to make or receive a call in an emergency then I know that my mobile is always on my person.
Size and easy and simple portability is what makes my dumb clamshell amongst my small change etc more suitable as a daily carry throughout the day. I prefer a £12 phone in my pocket to an expensive phone on one side.

Posted on 11/01/2021 00:16 by EmilysDad@ Corners ... Well please do name some perhaps? I can't see how asking for such companies makes that a poor question?
Kodak is a very good example ... maybe not quite in the same way as you suggest, but they declined to jump onto the digital photography bandwagon as they thought it was a passing phase. By the time they realised it wasn't, the bandwagon had passed. Kodak

Yes indeed (and thank you for suggesting a name) but Kodak was in the photography image market and sold cameras for a very small profit and made huge profits on films and all the stuff for printing - paper, chemicals... and accessories and yes they didn't adapt to digital formats.
However as you say the club isn't in that position? We're not going to get digital campsites (I hope) and P is just talking about how the club needs a good booking system and website (which is nonsense it is good) and how it won't survive without one.

Posted on 11/01/2021 08:10 by peedeeHere is what the C&CC reported for 2019:
"The Clubโs digital Membership proposition, now in its fifth year, has continued to prove popular, with just over 43 per cent of the total membership now opting to receive their membership in this format. We have seen a growth in members wishing to opt for digital membership due to both advancing technology and for the desire to be more environmentally conscious"
It is difficult to understand why the C&MC don't make the same offering.

The data is available but the CAMC choose not to utilise it. How much less likely is an over-worked farmer who runs a CL as a sideline going to ensure that data is current, even if he had the technical expertise to do so.
Posted on 11/01/2021 20:51
The data exists in general for the examples I gave due mainly to the wonderful work of members who use the board and have extracted the data the hard way for the benefit of us all. They have for some even tagged the data to a moving interactive map for the benefit of other users. I have and do thank them for the ones I use.
This sort of useful acquisition is apparently beyond the club IT department. They do not offer these data analytics because they are not able!
As for your overworked farmer, they are more tech savvy than many professionals I know and they have to be and to belittle their knowledge is not deserved. They do this because the rural economy for small farmers is a total basket case and success with rural hospitality can be the difference between survival or failure.
