Basic but good

Birchbank
Stayed here for one night as part of the NC500. It is quite difficult to find - even the description in the brochure doesn't make it easy.. We had to ring Mrs Strang to assist and she was very helpful. We were made to feel very welcomed and were offered a book from their studio. The camping area is a small field with a mix of grass and hard standing pitches. Electric hookup provided. Incredible peaceful and stunning views. We found it easy enough to get in with our VW T6 camper, but I can see how others may struggle with larger outfits. Toilet is basic but clean, and it's nice to have a toilet so close to the camping area so you don't have to trudge for ages in the dark to find it. I personally really liked the old farm touch, but can see how this may not be for everyone. Just whatever you do, don't follow the postcode! Go to the south end of Elphin as if you're approaching from the south, and it's on your right as you approach a left hand bend going over a bridge. Look for a sign saying studio and a blue postbox and you'll see the CAMHC sign.

Caution

Birchbank
Stayed here for a single night stopover on the NC500. Good points - the area is spectacular. Bad points - access is awful with no warning on site details; we only just got in with our 7.6m motorhome due to the tight gates, steep track approach and overhang trees. Pitch area resembles a disused sheep pen complete with wandering sheep - although admittedly a working farm. Toilet was grim. Water access away from pitch area in not the cleanest area. Chemical waste apparently in a drum in a further field. Poor value at £18 compared to Morvich CAMC site previous night at £31. We’d avoid in future. Needs re-inspecting. Overall scoring system for reviews weights towards area attributes rather than site.

Excellent

Having just spent 5 days at Birchbank, I can confirm that atrocious weather did not dampen our enjoyment of this place. Yes, the location of water and chemical disposal could be better and yes, access is tight but , with care, it is far from impossible for our pretty long outfit. Otherwise scores are very high indeed for friendliness, location, views and some interesting walks direct from site. Raucous sports cars and motor cycles can be seen on the NC500 but they fail dismally to spoil the tranquility . We are already plotting a return .

A mixed bag

Birchbank
I have read some of the other review and agree with a lot of the things said. I chose this site as it was in the location I wanted and the directions were a good help when arriving. Access to the site is tricky and as stated in one of the other review, would be more difficult for someone towing a large caravan. I went into the site and rang the owner's number and after saying I was there, the wife turned up promptly and confirmed my pitch. When asked she told us where the water supply was which is not in the field where pitches are and the best was of getting my motorhome around to it. I had to drive out of the field and then reverse up to the water supply. At this point I would add a word of caution to the drivers of other motorhomes. The track is narrow and there is a lot of shrubbery to the side and overhang tree branches. They were scrapping along the side and roof of my motorhome causing my aerial (a single stem antenna) to be ripped off (and is unrepairable).. Also as stated in other reviews, the facilities are of poor standard and seriously need updating. It is up to the individual camper to decided weather the excellent location outweighs the tricky access and poor facilities. Don't forget, if you do visit this site, be careful of the shrubs and overhanging branches

Peace, quiet and rabbits galore

Birchbank
Lovely little site just above the NC500 and although you can see all the other motorhomes zooming along, you can't hear them. The views are lovely. Mrs Strang arrived on her off road vehicle and was happy to sell us some of her eggs - delicious. Facilities a little antiquated but worth it for the tranquillity.
